Washington Times has an interesting story:

"Chertoff to hand Obama immigration successes"

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff declared success Wednesday on President Bush's vow to double the size of the U.S. Border Patrol and near-success on his pledge to build a fence along the U.S.-Mexico border. The two measures leave President-elect Barack Obama in a better position to get an immigration bill passed, he said.

Mr. Chertoff said the Bush administration's recent step-up in enforcement has finally made a dent in illegal immigration, and should ease worries of those who blocked last year's immigration bill, arguing that the government needed to prove it was serious about enforcement before it could legalize current illegal aliens.

Posted by Defense Attorney Phoenix Arizona

Reform Coming?

Immigration reform could become a reality with the rising presence of Hispanic voters in the U.S. NPR has the story:

"Hispanic Turnout May Spur Immigration Overhaul"
by Jennifer Ludden

In recent years, political advice on immigration in both parties has gone something like this: "It's the third rail of politics." CNN has the story:

"Commentary: McCain can't catch a break"
By Ruben Navarrette Jr., Special to CNN

SAN DIEGO, California (CNN) -- Thanks to the immigration issue, many Latinos think of Democrats as the good guys and Republicans as the bad guys. It's an attitude that spells trouble for John McCain.

But it isn't that simple, and this election proves it. McCain -- a Republican -- risked his political career to pursue comprehensive immigration reform, while Barack Obama -- a Democrat -- was late to the issue and made some bad choices once he stepped into the debate.

I understand the larger argument. As I have written on many occasions, when Republicans ran Congress, they bungled immigration reform by clinging to an enforcement-only strategy, declaring English the national language, and ignoring anti-Latino racism.

Posted by Phoenix Serious Injury Attorney

Mexican Official in Trouble

A Mexican immigration official was seeking to enter the United States, whereupon over 150 pounds of marijuana were found in his truck. The IHT story is on Yahoo Immigration News:

"U.S.-Mexico border fence will split friendship park"
By Randal C. Archibold Published: October 22, 2008

IMPERIAL BEACH, California: At a time of tumult over immigration, with illegal workers routed from businesses, record levels of deportations, border walls getting taller and longer, Friendship Park here has stood out as a spot where international neighbors can chat easily over the fence.

Or through it, anyway. Families and friends, some of them unable to cross the border because of legal or immigration trouble, exchange kisses, tamales and news through small gaps in the tattered chain-link fence. Yoga and salsa dancing, communion rites, protest and quiet reflection all transpire in the shadow of a stone obelisk commemorating the area where Mexican and American surveyors began demarcating the border nearly 160 years ago after the war between the countries.

"It's hard to see each other, to touch," said Manuel Meza, an American citizen sharing coffee and lunch through the fence with his wife, who was deported and now drives three hours for regular visits at the fence. The county is once again preparing to continue this for the following year. This expenditure has brought passionate arguments on both sides. Some support it as a more "humanitarian" way to act, and others oppose it because of the belief that it encourages illegal activity. AZ Daily Star has the article:

"Vote set on county aid for desert water stations"
By Erica Meltzer, Arizona Daily Star

Every year Pima County gives $25,000 to Humane Borders to help pay for water stations in the desert — a move the Board of Supervisors is poised to approve again today.

Humane Borders maintains 80 water stations, most consisting of a single 65-gallon water barrel fitted with a spigot and a 30-foot-high flag to alert illegal immigrants, along the most heavily trafficked corridors. The county expenditure represents about 14 percent of the program's $180,000 annual cost.

The program has drawn criticism from opponents of illegal immigration who say this amounts to "aiding and abetting" illegal immigration in violation of federal law.

Read Full Article AZ Daily Star

Posted by Phoenix Family Law and Divorce Lawyer

Border and Political Developments

Yahoo Immigration News has a couple very recent interesting articles about immigration reflecting the current situation. Yahoo Immigration News has an interesting article:

"Mexico quietly helps emigrants to US learn Spanish"

By LAURA WIDES-MUNOZ, AP Hispanic Affairs Writer

MIAMI - For more than a decade, as the immigration debate has swelled on both sides of the border, the Mexican government has been quietly providing money, materials and even teachers to American schools, colleges and nonprofit organizations.

The programs aren't substitutes for U.S. curricula, but educators familiar with them say they provide a lifeline for adult students with little formal education by helping them become literate in Spanish — and by extension, English.

Yet many educators are wary of even talking about the programs, fearing they might stoke an anti-immigrant backlash.

Read Full Article Yahoo Immigration News

Posted by Abogado Phoenix accidentes en sitios de construccion

Businesses want legalization of migrants

Business groups have teamed up with Mexican immigrant interests to find ways to legalize people already in the United States.
